Hardware Configuration Opinions

hello everyone, i am looking for user opinions on some stuff here, my server which i am setting up has a 2.8GHz processor with 1GB ram (max 4GB supported) on top of that my "uplink" to the internet is about 526KB/s, i have several HDDs to choose from but i am lingering around a couple of the smaller ones, i have the options of useing software raid 0 on the 40GB HDD with the 80GB HDD but i dont have a redundancy system for backups, i could go with the a software raid 1 with the same HDDs but i would be limited to 40GB space, ulternatly i could set the system up with no raid configuration, ei

/var/home instead of /home

Hello,

I bought virtualmin pro and installed it without problems. Because my server was partioned with 4 GB on /home and 130 GB on /var (and virtualmin seems to prefer /home) i've done the following:

  • re-mounted partition that was on /home to another mountpoint
  • created a symlink from /home point to /var/home
  • enabled quotas on /var

But now, when I create a new virtual host I get this error:

Backup failed

I have Virtualmin Virtual Servers Version 3.41.gpl and I cannot backup my virtual server by FTP option.

FTP server : 192.168.0.41 File on server : Login as user : web with password : ******

Backup failed : Missing or invalid absolute path on FTP server

I need your help please.

Thanks.

Iptables -- any good script for Virtualmin?

I am running FC6 and Virtualmin Pro, and still have a few hackers daily trying to hit me, especially on 22 and 25. I am getting a lot of hijackers as well on 25, and had to turn that port off... but then realized that I could not receive mail!

Anyone have a good iptables script that will further lock down for the Virtualmin configuration?

Best partition Scheme

hello everyone, I am running UBUNTU 6.06.1LTS server and i am wondering what would be the best partition scheme for my hardware configuration, currently i have an 8.5GB HDD (hd0 / hda) and an 80GB HDD (hd1 / hdb) i also have the availability of a 40GB HDD and i was thinking of reserving the 80GB HDD for all of the user accounts but because logs and databases would take up a large amount of space i am wondering what would be optimal.
