I'm currently setting up a server at home for development and backup. just installed centos 5.3 so need to setup fqdn on it (and setup dns behind my router)
I'm wanting to buy a Pro version so its the same as my live server. is there a problem using IP of 192.168.1.50 (say) as the IP address ?
thanks Brian
Hi Brian,
That's no problem at all unless you want to be able to access it remotely.
If you're looking to be able to access it externally, you may want to poke around a bit in System Settings -> Module Config -> Network Settings -- you can make some tweaks in there to change things like what IP address is stored for your server in DNS.

ok, thanks. I wondered if the IP address happened to be the same as somebody else then the licence might complain.
will likely set up Dynamic DNS so I can access remotely, but the IP address will efectively be 192.168.1.xx so not sure I can set it to the actual external IP address. (guess I may need to change my broadband provider to get a static IP)

Host ID is generated from a number of aspects of your system. It will pretty much never be the same across multiple machines, regardless of IP address.

you guys are really nice :o)
anyway, built the server, Athlon X2, 2GB RAM, 320GB hard disk.
installed Centos 5.3
followed the instructions:
www.virtualmin.com/documentation/id,centos_5_install
which describes how to build a web server. pretty good I must say.
have GPL installed and looks good :o)
(have to set up Dynamic DNS yet, so will be the weekend as I'd better get on with some real work!)
thanks Brian
I have a silent server at home for the backups. Im sure a static IP will be very beneficial.
You don't need an extra license for a devel/backup server. You can use the same one.
Aren't we nice? ;-)
And, a private IP is fine for devel purposes. You can use dyndns.org to have a public name for use for allowing the real server to send you backups over ssh. Virtualmin has support for dynamic names using dyndns.org.

You are nice! but let me get this right, We have a license for our hosted server but the same license can be applied to our development server?
The dev server is on a local address 192.168.. so just do the "upgrade to pro" bit, enter the same serial number and key and take advantage of your kindness?
Correct. We permit one backup and/or development system to use the same license. The rules for that are pretty loose, though they may get more strict if we find the permissiveness gets abused. So far, most folks are using it as intended. I do a spot check of our license and repo logs every once in a while to look for abuse, and it's not been a big enough problem to even write automated detection tools for (but as Virtualmin gets more popular, I likely will need to automate it...those logs are getting pretty big these days).
So, yes, our official position is that you can use the same license on a backup and/or development machine. You don't need to tell us about it, or ask permission.
You might get a license warning if the ID of either system changes for any reason (IP, hostname, kernel changes, etc.), but it is a warning only and will not effect functionality in any way, and will clear on its own in a few days as long as those things stabilize.
