OT? expression engine setting help in VM GPL

Hi,

I have a new domain set up in VM GPL on Centos 5.2. The site admin plans to use expression engine to manage content and needs to have a path to db.

When I use root access to create a db for him it is in /var/lib/mysql and I've set the permissions appropriately. But no matter what name I use I get this message:

Unable to select the database

Anyone have experience with this?

I hadn't run into that error before.

What specifically do you do when it gives you that particular error?
