Happy to report that the purchase and install of PRO went great on my fresh install of Fedora Core 3!
Just a quick question on PHP & MySQL versions that PRO will utilize. Right now the box has PHP 4.3.11 and MySQL 3.23.58. Once things get kicked off and you get past the Early Adopter stage of the install/update process for PRO are you going to consider PHP 5.0.x and MySQL 4.1.x?
Thanks, Mark
Hi Mark,
I'm glad things are working well so far for you! It's good to know that most of the installer issues have been resolved. ;-)
We will definitely be including PHP4 and PHP5 on all platforms that we support--the versions will be whatever is included to start with (so for you on FC3, you'll keep your current PHP 4 version) and then a recent version of whatever is missing from the system (which on FC3, PHP5 is missing, so we'll provide that package). I've been working on a bit of magical incantation to allow each user to select which PHP version they use--and possibly even allowing a per-directory selection. There will also definitely be an addition to the script installer that allows Virtualmin to automatically select the best version of PHP for whatever script is being installed and set it up appropriately. It will be pretty slick.
There comes a point where we have to respect the users choice of software (i.e. you picked the OS, and it's not our place to come in and replace core parts of the system all willy-nilly). I believe MySQL is well past that point, due to the complexity of supporting multiple versions on a single system (and we would never replace the existing version because that would certainly break our guarantee of "if it runs on a system without Virtualmin, it will run on the same system with Virtualmin").
