domain name not working within network

I started out with Ubuntu 9.04 and was signing in as username of kc8tdw. When I made a virtual server and try to set admin name as kc8tdw, it wouldn't let me. So I reloaded Ubuntu and changed the username, reloaded virtualmin and created the virtual server of kc8tdw.com.

I have aliases and dns records setup and I can not go to kc8tdw.com, I have to put in the ip address. Before using vitrualmin, I was using another control panel and had no issues using the kc8tdw.com. Can someone please let me know what I am doing wrong? I would like to use the kc8tdw.com within my network.

Thanks,

Ken

Hi Ken,

You can see a DNS report on your domain here:

http://www.intodns.com/kc8tdw.com

It looks like at least one of the IP's that your domain has setup as a nameserver aren't responding to DNS queries.

I don't have a static ip address, so I use freedns and a program to update my ip. Not sure what this has to do with my internal network though?

Well, I can't really speak to your previous setup...

However, your web browser somehow has to know where to go to find your website. And for that, it queries the DNS servers listed on your domain name registrar for kc8tdw.com.

The site I mentioned above is suggesting that, when querying at least one of those DNS servers, it's not answering.

So, if one or more of your DNS servers isn't responding, that could certainly be causing the issue you're seeing.

The DNS servers listed for your domain at your registrar are:

    NS3.AFRAID.ORG
    NS2.AFRAID.ORG
    NS4.AFRAID.ORG
    NS1.AFRAID.ORG

I'd verify that all of those are correct.

I went to network-tools.com and did a trace from there and this is what I get.

This is telling me that kc8tdw.com is getting to me, which I know. My problem is internal, not external. I was using EHCP before and with the internet down, I could type in kc8tdw.com and get to my server, internally. This should me that somewhere in my linux config, something is wrong that it will not internally translate the kc8tdw.com to my webserver's ip address. This is what I am looking for on help with.

Thanks,

Ken

On the PC you are browsing from, do you have the domain and IP entered in the host file?
this is usually needed for internal browsing so your browser knows where to go
