centos 7 vs debian

question, from what im understanding while Centos is a grade A OS on the list, it seems from what I am reading that a Debian based works better with Virtualmin, is this correct?

hi anwoke8204,

Both OSes are great! / A grade and I would say, the thing is, I guess, the accessible docs on public net.

I use debian since debian 5 on servers and on personal machines since early version 6. I did try ubuntu for couple of years and fedora, gentoo and centos. I love centos for concept that everything running within the os is like separate box - like sand box, if one thing fail others will keep running, its very stable and like gentoo and debian, its very well configurable however for me - I do not know why (perhaps my limited know-how to centos) it took me too long time to configure everything for my needs - longer then gentoo YAY).

Centos have great docs accessible online and offline and debian - well you have to search it more deeply and be more specific to find what you looking for and, as it works as any other linux distro, which means if you know logic of linux, then you can apply most of it to debian very - very easy. I find debian stable same as centos and I did had very hardly any issues with config or running it be it server or daily use machine - perhaps setting the whole os becomes very easy after some time.. you know you install simple naked system and you deploy your own (bash) scripts to install and let the setup whole thing by it self. I would say, perhaps try it for yourself to go with debian and / or centos as well. In both ways you cannot go wrong that's for sure and you would see the difference on your own.

They are both brilliant OSes - its just your personal preference what you would use and they are both very well supported by virtualmin folks and they do excellent support for both, I have to say!

On other hand and personally speaking - I would recommend you to go with debian (my own personal preference) and not any derivatives of debian like ubuntu. Regards Ubuntu - which is based on debian but its not same! Don't get me wrong or offencive about ubuntu, its good os as well but as long years based linux os user I found that debian is much more stable, secure, takes much less resources to accomplish the task be it server or your private machine end. In end of the day debian based means derived from origin (debian) which = different thing, different issues and different configs.. same like centos and fedora..

Once again its about your personal taste for os and the things are done with the os. I hope it helps, perhaps have bite from both of the cakes and / to see which one taste better for you :)

Best Regards

Yup, as unborn said both should work great!

If you run into an issue with either, let us know so we can get it fixed up; but both should be just fine.

Yup, it all comes down to personal preference, and if one suits your needs better than the others.

Some folks like CentOS, some like Ubuntu, and some like Debian. Each is a good choice.

As far as Virtualmin support goes, they are all supported well.

I prefer Centos, but I installed my virtualmin licence on a debian system as a test to see if it would be able to install the scripts and the missing dependencies I am having a hard time finding for Centos, and they downloaded and installed just fine. it downloaded all the dependencies that I am unable to find on centos with out a hitch, downloaded them, and installed them, then installed the corresponding script.

@anwoke8204

So I think when we consider Centos/Fedora/Gentoo or be it Debian versus other distributions, it's important to note that we are basically talking about apples and oranges. Certain distributions are meant to be installed and configured with little input from the user like Ubuntu / Linux Mint, and others require knowledge and experience to use properly - and be free. What's matters is that Linux continue to serve both casual and more sophisticated users, and Centos as well as Debian is an important part of that effort!

I am glad that you taste both of the cakes - its up to you which one you would like to eat :)

There isn't one right choice -- there isn't one that's objectively better than the others in terms of security or robustness.

There are huge communities behind all of them, and you can do well with any of them in a server environment. We recommend the one that you're most familiar with, and that best meets your needs.

We're going to mark this one as fixed, thanks for all your input!
