I receive an email notification with subject : Cron <web2@ns406606> /home/web2/.usermin/mailbox/auto.pl body :

I can also raise this error on display by running the cron job /home/web2/.usermin/mailbox/auto.pl
I don't wan dovecot to run because I don't need it and to avoid many hacking attempts to connect on POP
You've got an autoresponder setup for that user. Disable autoresponders in Usermin for that user, and cron will stop checking for mail.
You can still have autoresponders setup in Webmin, or you can configure Usermin to not use POP/IMAP for checking mail (Usermin also supports directly reading the Maildir, which you can find in the Usermin Configuration module (Webmin->Webmin->Usermin Configuration->Usermin Module Configuration->Read Mail), and set Mail storage format for inbox to "QMail style directory (Maildir)".
I tend to setup my autoresponders in Webmin/Virtualmin, though, if I'm not using the server as a mail server in the general case. You can find that in "Edit Users" under the domain that contains the user, using the "Send automatic reply" option. That way I don't think Usermin needs to run at all (unless you're using it for other stuff...but, it sounds like mail is not an important consideration for you).

There are no autoresponders for that user, only a forwarder. Thanks for detailing the settings for reading mail without dovecot. It work well on a server, which features a mail read page similar to the one I had with imap collection. However, the second server misses the left administrative/navigation pane and shows an ugly, almost unformatted list of mails
Doesn't matter. Forwarders are the same as autoresponders. They also work as the user and run from cron. You either have to setup Usermin to read directly from Maildir, or do all of your forwarding and autoresponding from within Webmin.
I don't understand what you're talking about with "the second server". Is it using a modern theme? (Authentic is recommended.)

I made the change in usermin "Mail storage format for Inbox" to "QMail style directory (Maildir)".
I have 2 identical servers - The second is a backup for the first. Their setup should be the same though we just resinstalled the second one with ubuntu 16.04, the first one runs 12.04.
It is the second freshly reinstalled that has a strange usermin.
When I go to "Login to usermin" from the virtual server user, I get a very different page
This is not linked to the current issue though, I tried using Dovecot/Impa, it is the same.
I also noticed some other differences : different order and differenet/missing icones for some items in webmin/virtualmin menu, the link to the landing status page is in the last bottom menu item in the second server instead of the leftes one in the horizonatl bottom menu.
This might have somtheing to do with Ubuntu 16.04

That's the wrong theme. Go to Usermin configuration as I said above, though you need the Language and Themes page instead of module configuration, and set the theme to Authentic Theme.
When did you install the second server? AFAIK the theme should be set automatically, so I'm not sure what happened in your case.

I installed this server 3 weeks ago. Interestingly, unlike the older installation, the theme choice indicates a default Global theme (Virtualmin Framed Theme), that I had to change for a Personnal choice of Authentic.
I did not know that Usermin had its own settings, which also defaulted on the wrong theme. I changed it.
Ah, so that would have been the old installer. It should have set the right theme, but I'm not gonna sweat it that it didn't, since the new Virtualmin 6 installer is out, and I know it defaults to the right thing.
The global theme sets the theme for all users, personal theme sets it for the currently logged in user. Personal theme can be chosen by the user if they have the permission to change themes. Personal them overrides the global theme for that one user.

New install here on Centos 7 and had same issue. Resolved by noticing that the line related to the listening was set to IPV6.
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf Was: listen = [::] Changed to: listen = *
Restarted dovecot and it worked.
I had been setting up Postfix, squirrelmail, webmin, usermin, and dovecot all on the same day, so I blame myself. Must have mucked it up along the way.
All good now.
