On a new 14.04 installation, we are seeing a lot of new, apparently randomly generated zone files in /var/cache/bind/. They all start with db- (eg. db--VcU3yHzn) and all appear to be mirrors of current zone files we have. Is this normal in a new installation or does it indicate some sort of issue?

Howdy -- while I'm not familiar with that, it's in the cache directory, rather than in the BIND zone file directory. I'm guessing that's just BIND's method of speeding up load times. I don't believe you're seeing a problem of any sort.
However, if you run into any problems, errors, or issues, let us know and we can look into that deeper.
