Virtualmin roadmap.

Hi guys,

When do you plan to realese new version of the Virtualmin? From what i saw, there will be a lot of new features and major fixes. Is there some public roadmap for the Virtualmin development and its current state (new features, bug fixes, todo etc.)?

Best regards,

Filip.

We released a new version just a couple of weeks ago! ;-)

Our release schedule is roughly every two to four weeks.

For bug fixes and feature requests, the bug tracker is the definitive source of information. Our todo list is in SVN, but it's not fit for human consumption--it's very short notes to ourselves about what we're working on.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. If you have a specific feature in mind, that me or Jamie has mentioned as &quot;coming soon&quot;, let me know what it is, and I'll give you a rough idea of what &quot;soon&quot; means. I try not to pre-announce anything, but often fail.

With releases every two to four weeks, changes are almost never major, but they come very frequently. We're merely continuing our Open Source tradition of &quot;release early, release often&quot;, although we temper that with a lot more quality control testing and a much larger automated test suite than our purely Open Source stuff. There's a lot of evidence that this model produces better software faster, but it doesn't lend itself to big announcements and major releases with huge new features or changes. (I think this is also a positive, though, for a server deployment...abrupt changes are a terrible thing on a production server. Incremental, steady, improvements are easy to handle and far less stressful.)

Oh, and Webmin/Usermin were just updated a couple of days ago. In a lot of cases, bugs fixed in Webmin/Usermin will directly effect Virtualmin...so at least 50% of the bug fixes and enhancements in those releases was related to Virtualmin and/or requested by Virtualmin users.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for replies.

<div class='quote'>If you have a specific feature in mind, that me or Jamie has mentioned as &quot;coming soon&quot;, let me know what it is, and I'll give you a rough idea of what &quot;soon&quot; means.</div>

Mainly I have on my mind the FS#5158 - PowerDNS issue, which prevents my Virtualmin implementation effectivly.

<div class='quote'>With releases every two to four weeks (...)</div>

Great to hear that! Looking forward for next releases;-) On a different thread you've mentioned about low traffic in the developer subforum. We are coping with some problems, which prevent us from implementing Virtualmin but if we only resolve them, we'll start look deep into Virtulmin internals and increase the traffic in this subforum;-)

Regards,
Filip.

Yeah, so, since it's been closed as &quot;fixed in 3.66&quot;, that means you'll have it in hand in a few days. Jamie just mailed me last night about wrapping up the major new feature for 3.66, so we'll be branching 3.66 to begin QC and release the GPL version probably tomorrow or the next day. Major new features add a couple of days to the test cycle for Virtualmin, though, and 3.66 does add a pretty big new feature.
