Creating a sub-domain with Joomla installed

I want to create a tempory sub-domain server with Joomla installed to help my local Habitat For Humanity orginazation develop a new web presence. The script for installing joomla doesn't seem to work. If I create the virtual server habitat.mydomain.com and then attempt to install joomla using the script provided to do so, I end up with the address of: habitat.mydomain.com/habitat.

How can I get a URL of: habitat.mydomain.com with the script provided by Virtualmin for installing joomla into: habitat.mydomain.com?

Well, I found I did not have to do what I wanted to do the way I thought I should. Seems there is another (easier?) way. I found it at the joomla.com site. If your interested go here: http://help.joomla.org/component/option,com_easyfaq/task,view/id,46/Item...

You can choose to have scripts installed into the root directory, if it's the only thing that's going to be in that directory. It's not recommended if there will be any other content, because deleting the application will then delete everything in public_html. The other option is to install it into a subdirectory and then use proxy rules to make it sit on the / path. It's kind of arbitrary which is better--I installed into the root path for Virtualmin.com, but for my personal blog I put it into a subdirectory and proxied to it. (The proxy option does require some customization of Joomla so it knows it actually lives on the / path...)

Thanks, Joe. This tidbit will save me a lot of time and headaches. I hadn't realized this about "root".

Is there more info about the proxy option and customization of Joomla anywhere on the site?
