New installation an loads of probs.... :(

hi @ all ,

i purchased a few days ago the pro verion and ordered additional to it an istall service ( 49$ ) ....

.....Installation of any Virtualmin Professional bundle on one server Our Price: $49.00

(This item does not require shipping.)

A Virtualmin, Inc. technician will login to your system and perform the installation process for you. You must provide a root or sudo-capable account on a server with a freshly installed and supported Operating System.

k, brand new server is here, fedora 3 is setup , root account is ready ....

waiting, whats happen about the technican ..... k, lets wait a bit more ..........

waiting done , no waiting anymore .

  1. try the install.sh ---> 10000 fatal errors solving the most errors by installing old packages.. only bind8/9 error is left ( np, so i use 2 other dns ) disable the bind 8/9 in the config .... run instll.sh again .... arrghh after 20minutes it stops with a fatal error about fedora-usermgmt ... k, enough stupid errors from the script

so i tried it to install by hand ... 1 reinst the server 2 installed webmin 1.295 first try success :) no errors 3.installed virtualmin .... also no errors :)

making new virtual domains is no prob so far ... use the original settings and templates ( only thing changed : send mail to owner )

i use sendmail as mailplatform ( as far, as i can see ) from the webmin menue ( read usermail) i can write and read mails perfectly but , if i try to use any email client, to send mails, i get an error , saying relaying denied.

the serveroprts are more or less all listening pop3/smtp etc etc....

any ideas, how to solve this ? or, better start again from beginning ?

btw , its the first time for me, to work with linux ....

Hi Richard,

I am just another customer, but I can tell you that Virtualmin Professional is an excellent piece of software, and it works very well in most cases. I'm not sure what are causing the problems you are having, but one of the company representatives (probably Joe) will likely respond soon.

In the meantime, if you are going to start over from scratch anyway, I would suggest that you pick a different operating system. Debian is not supported yet, so that is not a good choice at the moment. Fedora Core 3 is supported, but it is no longer maintained by the Fedora project (since it is now EOL), so you must set it up for Fedora Legacy to get critical updates. My suggestion is that you go with CentOS 4.3, which is a free clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. If you prefer Fedora, then I would suggest using version 4 or 5.

If for some reason you can't get in touch with Joe quickly enough, I would be happy to perform the installation for you at the same $49 rate offered here.

Good luck!

Alan

Hey Richard,

Sorry for the slow reply today (and for not catching your installation purchase--I try to keep an eye on such orders, but we don't get a special notification for installs vs. regular purchases). As I mentioned in my email, I've been catching up today.

I'll take your issues one at a time (I've also contacted you via email, and I'll take over the installation troubles for you).

<i>1. try the install.sh ---&gt; 10000 fatal errors
solving the most errors by installing old packages..
only bind8/9 error is left ( np, so i use 2 other dns )
disable the bind 8/9 in the config ....

I can't really guess what's going wrong here. The only reason you should be getting any package errors is if you're using packages other than those provided by the OS. If you only have Fedora packages, and our script is complaining, I'll fix it. But I need specific errors. I recognize the fedora-usermgmt error, from issues with conflicting clamav packages...but unless you have packages from other sources than Fedora, it shouldn't happen, since clamav isn't provided by Fedora Core 3. I think. ;-)

As Alan said, FC3 isn't supported by Fedora anymore, so if you're going Fedora, go FC4 or FC5. CentOS 4.3 is also an excellent choice for a server.

<i>so i tried it to install by hand ...
1 reinst the server
2 installed webmin 1.295 first try success :) no errors
3.installed virtualmin .... also no errors :)</i>

Obviously, you shouldn't have to do this. And, it'll be a lot of work to do it this way. (The install.sh is barely scratching the surface of the actual installation work that we're doing during install...there's also an RPM called virtualmin-base that does a huge amount of work to make everything Just Work once the install is completed successfully.)

<i>i use sendmail as mailplatform ( as far, as i can see )</i>

Sendmail is supported, but Postfix is the recommended MTA, and it is the one that our install scripts setup for you (during a successful install).

<i>from the webmin menue ( read usermail) i can write and read mails perfectly but , if i try to use any email client, to send mails, i get an error , saying relaying denied.</i>

Sendmail is not configured by default to allow any host other than localhost to relay through it. Postfix, after a successful installation, will be configured to allow SMTP authenticated relaying.

<i>any ideas, how to solve this ?</i>

Accept my apologies for the trouble and let me log in and get it all straightened out for you.

<i>or, better start again from beginning ?</i>

I do strongly recommend starting from a fresh OS installation of one of the supported operating systems. Those are listed at the end of the Early Adopter FAQ:

http://www.virtualmin.com/faq/one-faq?faq_id=15912#16403

(Actually x86_64 on FC5 is also now supported...need to update the FAQ.)
